University of Utah North Medical Drive Reconfiguration

Salt Lake City, UT

Dual roundabout helps improves circulation, part of larger multi-modal transit plan.

Located at the heart of Salt Lake City’s thriving medical center, the University of Utah Medical Center and the Huntsman Cancer Institute are two of the region’s most valued medical destinations. These hospitals have seen tremendous growth in recent years alongside the robust population growth of the region. Acknowledging this, in 2016 the University of Utah began studying the potential opportunities to reconfigure the multi-modal transit management for patients and families visiting these two medical centers.

After assisting the University with the planning and analysis of the site, Talisman Civil Consultants was selected in 2019 as a sub-consultant on a design team led by Elliott Work Group to help design and engineer this reconfiguration of the northern pinnacle of North Medical Drive. In addition to accommodating additional vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic and improving vehicular circulation for these two facilities, the project also included the creation of a new 1,400-stall parking garage for shared use. The TCC team performed site civil services for the addition of this new garage.

The roadway’s design includes the addition of a dual roundabout strategy designed to improve circulation and minimize stopping and congestion. A multi-use pathway and an underground tunnel for pedestrians will also be added, with TCC performing analysis, grading, and utility relocation for this important addition.

In addition to all engineering services provided, TCC also delivered topographic and existing conditions surveys as well as boundary relocation survey services.

The project is slated for construction completion in late 2023.
